Citrus fruits have a longer shelf life relative to many other fruits. However, they can sometimes
become wrinkly or lose some of their refreshing chew. When your tangerines are turning a little ugly but aren’t going bad, it’s time to pull out the juicer. Juice 7-10 tangerines to pair with breakfast. This is an excellent way to utilize all of the tangerines that might only be available in a large pack at the grocery store. Orange or grapefruit juice can also pep up your morning meal! And, a classic lemonade is always sure to please. Below is how to make a simple, delicious citrus-ade.
Ingredients:
Lemons or limes (other citruses work for this recipe, just be sure to adjust simple syrup levels so your drink is not too sweet)
White Sugar (coconut sugar also works, but will slightly darken color)
Water
Tools:
A manual juicer or lemon squeezer
Knife
Cutting board
1 C measuring cup
Pitcher
Whisk
Strainer/sieve
Instructions:
Juice enough lemons or limes to produce one cup of juice. Strain juice and set aside.
In a pitcher, add 1 C of sugar
Add 1.5 C of water to a pot or kettle and bring to a boil. Once boiling, remove from heat and carefully measure 1 C of hot water. Add water to the pitcher of sugar.
Whisk sugar and water together vigorously until fully incorporated. The sugar should be completely dissolved.
Add lemon juice to the sugar water mixture and whisk. This 1:1:1 ratio is the basis of your lemonade.
Finally, add water until the lemonade is diluted to your liking. Add ice and enjoy! The pitcher of lemonade can be stored in the fridge for about 4 days.
Tip: Steps 3 & 4 are all you need to create a homemade simple syrup. Make, store in a sterile container, and keep in the fridge for up to one month. Simple syrup is a great ingredient to have on hand and is used in a variety of drinks and cocktails.
