Soap from Leftover Cooking Oil

Did you just deep fry a huge batch of chicken? Or was it fish and chips? Just fries? Whatever it is you now have a lot of oil and you know you can’t just pour that down the drain (pouring down the drain will clog pipes and cause wear, wait for oil to solidify before tossing) so you decided to save the oil and now you’re not sure what to do? Why not turn that oil into something useful, what about soap!

Ingredients:

500g used cooking oil

70g lye (sodium hydroxide)

165g water

10g vinegar (to remove odour) *optional

Essential oils (act as fragrance) *optional

Tools:

Stainless steel pot,

Stainless steel cup

Stainless steel ladle

Apron

Gloves

Thermometer

Digital scale

Mold

Sieve

Stove top

Instructions:

1. Weigh 165g of water into stainless steel container

2. Weigh 70g of Lye and insert carefully into water container. Let it cool down to 45°C. (Handle lye with protective gloves and eye mask in a well ventilated area)

3. Filter the oil using sieve and weigh 500g of used cooking oil into another stainless steel pot and heat it to 45°C.

4. Carefully pour the lye solution into the oil and stir with a regular pace until “tracing” occur.

5. Add vinegar or scent oil if desired.

6. Pour into mold, consider using recycled molds too such as yogurt containers!

7. Remove the soap from the mold carefully using gloves after 2 days and let it air dry.

8. The soaps are ready to use after 5 weeks.
